Partitioning of Si and O between liquid iron and silicate melt: A two-phase ab-initio molecular dynamics study

چکیده
[1] The magma ocean process in the early history of the Earth has a great influence on the light element identities and contents of the core which subsequently affect the energy of the geodynamo provided by the compositional convection and the inner core growth through their effect on the phase diagram of iron alloy. In the present work, a twophase ab-initio molecular dynamics method is established to study the solubility of silicon and oxygen in liquid iron in equilibrium with silicate melt. The ab-initio results are found to be in close agreement with experimental data. At the base of a deep magma ocean (39 GPa and 3116 K), liquid iron contains 2.7 wt% silicon and 0.5 wt% oxygen at the current bulk Earth composition. The oxygen content is low compared with its current estimate in the core, indicating a deeper magma ocean may need to be invoked. Citation: Zhang, Y., and G. Structure and dynamics of bioactive phosphosilicate glasses and melts from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations
Ab initio Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to investigate the melt precursor of a modified phosphosilicate glass with bioactive properties, and to quench the melt to the vitreous state. The properties of the 3000 K liquid were extensively compared with those of the final glass structure. The melt is characterized by a significant fraction of structural defects smal...
متن کاملAb initio chemical potentials of solid and liquid solutions and the chemistry of the Earth’s core
A general set of methods is presented for calculating chemical potentials in solid and liquid mixtures using ab initio techniques based on density functional theory ~DFT!. The methods are designed to give an ab initio approach to treating chemical equilibrium between coexisting solid and liquid solutions, and particularly the partitioning ratios of solutes between such solutions. For the liquid...
متن کاملThe Effect of Mg Adding Order on the Liquid Structure and Solidified Microstructure of the Al-Si-Mg-P Alloy: An Experiment and ab Initio Study
In this paper, the relationship between the liquid structure and the corresponding solidified microstructure of an Al-Si-Mg-P alloy was studied. Experimental results show that Mg can reduce the phosphorous-modification effect if it was added after adding Al-P alloy. However, when it is added before adding Al-P alloy, Mg has no effect on the phosphorous-modification. It is considered that the di...
متن کاملComposition of the low seismic velocity E layer at the top of Earth's core
Using ab initio simulations on Fe-Ni-S-C-O-Si liquids, we constrain the origin and composition of the low-velocity layer E0 at the top of Earth’s outer core. We find that increasing the concentration of any light element always increases velocity and so a low-velocity and low-density layer (for stability) cannot be made by simply increasing light element concentration. This rules out barodiffus...
متن کاملAb initio study of the phase separation of argon in molten iron at high pressures
[1] Using first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we study the solubility of argon in molten iron at high pressures and temperatures. In particular we explore whether the low pressure immiscibility of liquid Fe and Ar persists to high pressure (130 GPa) and temperature (4500K), or whether they mix. Starting from a variety of Fe/ Ar mixtures we find that they always separate rapidl...
